A WEEKEND IN THE MOUNTAINS – GOLDEN BRITISH COLUMBIA

Planning a trip with friends (or even a pair!) can be tough, especially when there are so many great spots to stop while you’re visiting. So, we’ve pulled together a trip report that includes our favourite activities that you and your squad need to experience when you’re in Golden, British Columbia Canada.

Golden is located within the Purcell + Rocky Mountains of southeastern BC, just 264 km (about 3 hours) from Calgary, and less than 2 hours from Canmore. Since it’s such a short drive, we started our adventures on the way at stop #1: Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park!

๐Ÿ—ป#1 Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park

This beautiful waterfall is the largest waterfall of the Kicking Horse River, reaching about  30m tall and 150m wide. The hike into the falls is nearly 5 km, and while it usually takes about 1.5 hours roundtrip, we spent some extra time hanging out near the falls and letting Metsa have some fun in the snow.

Depending on where you’re located and what time you hit the road, Wapta Falls is a great hike to do on the way to Golden. Who says getting there can’t be part of the adventure!?

Fun fact: The name Wapta Falls stems from a Nakoda word meaning “river”.

๐Ÿป#2 Whitetooth Brewing Co. What better activity to start off a friend trip than a visit to the local brewery! Whitetooth Brewing crafts small batch Belgian-inspired and West Coast influenced beers, and they have craft sodas and water for those of you who are driving or want something other than an adult beverage.

Some of our favourite brews include the Whitetooth Session Ale and the Speed Metal Stout, but there are a variety of beers for you to try including a cool high gravity series of beer. Their tasting room was bustling with locals and visitors so it was easy to strike up conversations with the many interesting people there. We were also lucky enough to get a nice big table on the patio where we could watch our friend Metsa take a quick nap in the sun.

Tip: If you want to take some of these tasty beers home with you, you’re able to purchase growlers there, or even bring your own from home to fill up!

๐Ÿ‚#3 Kicking Horse

What is there to do at Kicking Horse Resort if you’re not ripping down the hill? Well, quite a bit! We started off by checking out the tube park on the hill. It’s recently undergone a full re-design and is easy to access from the Jelly Bean lift.

If youโ€™re not looking to get on the hill that day, you can enjoy a variety of restaurants including Peak Grill where we tested out the nachos (A+), or check out the Golden Day Spa located on the hill.

Tip: Make sure you call the hill beforehand to ensure the tube park is open, and young children must be accompanied by an adult.

๐Ÿ #4 Lush Mountain Accommodations   We know that a huge part of traveling can be finding the right accommodation, and to put it simply, the Blaeberry Gorge Alpine Ranch from Lush Mountain Accommodations delivered! The accommodation was located about 20 minutes outside of Golden and is on an acreage surrounded by dense forest.

Our cabin was furnished, dog friendly, and even had a hot tub which was the perfect way to end our first action-packed day! The cabin can comfortably sleep 10 people and features both single and double beds. It was a luxury for our small crew, but it would also be great for a big group of adventure-loving friends too since itโ€™s located close to many great spots for hiking, snowmobiling, skiing and so much more!

๐Ÿบ#5 Northern Lights Wolf Sanctuary Wolves are beautiful, majestic creatures and this idea was solidified when we visited the Northern Lights Wolf Sanctuary! The sanctuary is open all year long and was a great, quick last spot to check out before we hit the road back to Calgary.

All of the staff at the sanctuary were well informed and happy to answer all of our questions. After the interpretive talk, you can walk around the space to and see the wolves in action, and read up on their history and learn more about protecting animals in our province.

๐Ÿ#6 Whitetooth Bistro

Against the backdrop of the Kootenay Mountains and the Dogtooth Range in downtown Golden, the Whitetooth is a casual yet elegant bistro with warm Duke red walls, black & white photos, butcher block tables and chocolate brown booths and banquettes.

We warmed up after a long day outdoors with deelish drinks + hearty made-from-scratch meals in our cosy little nook at the restaurant. Word on the street is that the WB has the best Sunday Brunch and Caesars in the area!

We  โค๏ธGolden! Our weekend trip was action packed and there was truly an endless list of activities we could have explored while we were there. Golden definitely makes our top list of weekend trips in Alberta because itโ€™s close to Calgary/Canmore, you can hike along the way and it truly offers something for everyone to do. Whether youโ€™re looking for a light walk and a good beer, or a rip down the mountain and wolves, youโ€™ll be happy you went.
